  • Universities have urged learners to apply early through official online portals, complete admission requirements and avoid fraudsters promising accommodation for a fee.

Thousands of students joining Kenyan universities for the 2026/2027 academic year are preparing for one of their first major challenges before reporting — securing safe, affordable and convenient accommodation.

As universities continue to expand enrolment, demand for hostel rooms has continued to rise, creating intense competition for the limited spaces available in institutional residences. To manage the growing demand, universities have introduced digital accommodation application systems designed to make room allocation faster, more transparent and more efficient.

Several institutions have already released detailed accommodation guidelines for first-year students, outlining the procedures, application platforms and requirements that learners must follow to secure hostel spaces.

Universities have advised students to apply early, complete admission procedures, upload all required documents and rely only on official communication channels. They have also warned parents and students against fraudsters who promise to secure hostel rooms in exchange for money.

While some universities have adequate capacity to accommodate a section of their students, others have encouraged learners who miss campus hostels to consider approved private accommodation facilities near their institutions.
