- The union says teachers should not wait for the implementation of the proposed grading structure.
- Officials have also advised teachers to fully document their duties during the ongoing job evaluation interviews.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga County branch has urged teachers not to delay pursuing career advancement as they await the government’s finalisation of new remuneration guidelines.
In a memo issued to members on Wednesday, July 29, Branch Executive Secretary Charles Otiende Agandate directed all eligible teachers to continue applying for the currently advertised promotion vacancies pending the government’s approval of the proposed career progression framework.
“Pending SRC determination and communication on the fate of the new proposed remuneration structure, we urge all eligible members to apply and attend interviews for the advertised promotion posts,” said Otiende in the memo.
The advisory comes as the union prepares for the transition from the 2017 Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) to a new grading structure.
Following public participation in May, attended by four representatives from Vihiga County, a proposal to replace the current 11 job groups with eight grades, ranging from ST 8 to ST 1, was submitted to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Implementation of the new grading structure will depend on the outcome of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s ongoing job evaluation.
However, union officials urged teachers not to postpone seeking promotions, encouraging all eligible members to take part in the ongoing interview process rather than wait for the new system to be implemented.
Teachers urged to document all responsibilities
The branch executive also called on teachers attending job description interviews to accurately document the full extent of their responsibilities to facilitate a fair evaluation.

Members were advised to capture all aspects of their workload, including classroom teaching, overtime, co-curricular activities and other school-based duties.
