The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet branch has welcomed President William Ruto’s appointment of former KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion as a commissioner of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), describing the move as a major boost for the teaching profession and Kenya’s education sector.
Speaking in Bomet, KNUT Bomet Branch Assistant Executive Secretary Geoffrey Bett said the union was pleased with the appointment, noting that Sossion’s vast experience in education leadership makes him the right person to help steer reforms at the commission.
“We warmly welcome the President’s decision to appoint Wilson Sossion as a TSC commissioner. He is one person who has dedicated many years of his life to serving teachers and improving education in Kenya. This appointment is long overdue,” Bett said.
He noted that when President Ruto assumed office, many teachers had expected Sossion to be considered for a senior position in the Ministry of Education, including Cabinet Secretary or Principal Secretary, owing to his extensive experience in the sector.
“Many of us believed he would be given a senior education position much earlier because of his knowledge and contribution to the education sector. Although it has taken time, we are grateful that he has now been entrusted with this important responsibility at the TSC,” Bett added.

According to Bett, Sossion’s leadership record during his tenure as KNUT Secretary-General gives teachers confidence that he will champion policies aimed at improving their welfare and strengthening the teaching profession.
“He has a proven track record. During his time at the helm of KNUT, he fought tirelessly for teachers’ rights, better salaries and improved working conditions. Many of the benefits teachers enjoy today are a result of his leadership and commitment,” he said.
Bett expressed optimism that Sossion would use his new position to advocate for fair promotions, improved remuneration, better working conditions and sound education policies that benefit both teachers and learners.
He said teachers across Bomet County view the appointment as an opportunity to strengthen the TSC and address long-standing concerns affecting educators across the country.
“As teachers, we have confidence that he will deliver because we have seen what he is capable of. We believe he will bring positive reforms to the commission and continue championing the welfare of teachers,” Bett said.
The KNUT official further observed that with some TSC commissioners expected to retire next year, Sossion could rise to occupy an even more influential leadership role within the commission if given the opportunity.
He urged Sossion to remain focused on protecting teachers’ interests while promoting professionalism, accountability and quality education.
Bett also thanked President Ruto for the appointment, saying it demonstrates recognition of experienced education leaders who understand teachers’ needs and aspirations.
“We pray for him as he takes up this new assignment. We believe his experience, commitment and leadership will help transform the TSC and improve the welfare of teachers across the country,” Bett said.
Sossion’s appointment has been widely welcomed by teachers’ unions and education stakeholders, who expect his experience in labour relations and education policy to help strengthen the Teachers Service Commission and advance reforms in Kenya’s education sector.
