Professor Susan Chepkong’a Yego, Acting Dean of the School of Education at Nyandarua University, has earned national recognition after being accorded the prestigious role of Mace Bearer during the installation of the ninth Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi. The ceremony, held on July 17, 2026, placed the distinguished academic at the centre of one of the institution’s most symbolic traditions, a role reserved for senior members of faculty.
Professor Yego, a resident of Baringo County, has built an illustrious career in education. She is an alumna of Solian Primary and Kapropita Girls High School, later earning her Bachelor’s degree from Moi University before pursuing both her Master’s and PhD in Education at the University of Nairobi. Her appointment as Mace Bearer was celebrated as a milestone for women’s leadership and academic excellence in the region.
Speaking to Education News, Gladys Jerop, founder of the Sisters of Jerop Initiative, praised Professor Yego for her exemplary leadership and commitment to mentorship. Jerop noted that the professor, who serves as a board member of the initiative, has inspired young girls in Baringo to embrace education, participate in mentorship programmes, and pursue leadership roles.

Professor Yego’s influence extends beyond Kenya. In 2025, she led a delegation of women leaders to London, championing global engagement and advancing the cause of women in leadership. Her recognition at the University of Nairobi further cements her role as a trailblazer in academia and a beacon of hope for future generations.
The Sisters of Jerop Foundation, which partners with county governments and organisations to support disadvantaged children, hailed the honour as a victory for the girl child. Jerop emphasised that Professor Yego’s achievements demonstrate the transformative power of education and mentorship in shaping society.
In her remarks, Professor Yego expressed gratitude to the University of Nairobi for the honour and challenged young girls to take education seriously as a pathway to a brighter future.
