Former KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion and education administrator Antonina Lentoijoni have been nominated as members of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). They will replace two commissioners whose six-year constitutional terms expired in May this year. The nominations now await vetting and approval by the National Assembly.
President William Ruto has nominated former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion and education administrator Antonina Lentoijoni to serve as members of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), paving the way for the reconstitution of one of Kenya’s most influential constitutional commissions.
The nominations were contained in Presidential Notification of Action No. XI of 2026, issued by the Executive Office of the President on Monday. The two names have been forwarded to the National Assembly for vetting and approval in accordance with the Constitution and the Teachers Service Commission Act.
If approved, Sossion and Lentoijoni will replace outgoing commissioners Mbage Njuguna Ng’ang’a and Leila Abdi Ali, whose six-year, non-renewable terms expired on May 2, 2026, creating vacancies in the commission.
The appointments conclude a recruitment process that began earlier this year after President Ruto declared the two vacancies and appointed a selection panel to identify suitable candidates.
More than 30 applicants were shortlisted and interviewed in June before the panel submitted its recommendations to the President. Both Sossion and Lentoijoni featured prominently among the shortlisted candidates.
The incoming commissioners are expected to strengthen the commission at a time when it is overseeing major education reforms, including teacher recruitment, promotions, deployment, implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system and preparations for the rollout of senior school.
Established under Article 237 of the Constitution, the TSC is responsible for registering trained teachers, recruiting and employing teachers, assigning them to public schools, promoting and transferring them, exercising disciplinary control and advising the national government on matters relating to the teaching profession.
Sossion’s nomination is likely to attract attention across the education sector.
A former KNUT Secretary-General and former nominated Member of Parliament, Sossion has remained one of most outspoken voices on education policy, teachers’ welfare and labour relations.
His appointment would mark a return to the centre of education governance, this time as a commissioner of the constitutional body responsible for managing more than 390,000 teachers nationwide.
Lentoijoni brings TSC experience
Lentoijoni is an experienced education administrator with deep knowledge of the commission’s operations, having served in senior management within TSC.
Her nomination is expected to add institutional continuity and administrative expertise to the commission as it handles increased recruitment, promotions and implementation of reforms in the teaching service.
The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee is expected to conduct public vetting of the two nominees before presenting its report to the House.
Should Parliament approve the nominations, President Ruto will formally appoint the two through a Gazette Notice, after which they will take the oath of office and begin serving their six-year constitutional terms.
Other nominations
Besides the TSC appointments, President Ruto nominated Dr Duncan Ojwang Oburu as Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and Flora Mutua as a member of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The President also announced nominations to the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee, alongside promotions and redeployments within the senior ranks of the Executive following approvals by the Public Service Commission.
