- The Public Service Superannuation Scheme introduced a contributory pension system for public servants, including teachers employed by TSC.
- Teachers are encouraged to register on the PSSS Member Portal to access pension records and nominate beneficiaries.
- The portal enables members to track contributions, update personal information and manage retirement benefits online.
The Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS) commenced on 1 January 2021, reforming retirement benefits management for public servants, including Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employees.
Previously, permanent and pensionable teachers were covered under the non-contributory Defined Benefit (DB) Pension Scheme, fully financed by the Government through the Exchequer. Under the new Defined Contribution (DC) Scheme, both employer and employee contribute to an individual retirement account.
The shift improves long-term sustainability of public sector pensions, promotes transparency and accountability, and aligns Kenya’s pension system with international best practices.
As at 1 January 2021, teachers below 45 years were automatically transitioned to PSSS, while those 45 years and above had the option to join or remain under the previous non‑contributory arrangement. All teachers employed on or after 1 January 2021 are automatically enrolled.
How to Register on the PSSS Member Portal
To access pension information and complete your member profile, visit the PSSS Member Portal and click “Sign Up” for first‑time registration. Register using your National ID Number or Payroll Number, create a secure password, and complete the process.
Log in using your National ID or Payroll Number and password. Open the Member Navigation menu, click the drop‑down arrow beside Beneficiary Nomination, and select “New Nomination.” Enter beneficiary details carefully, review, and submit.
This ensures your retirement benefits are paid to your nominated individuals per Scheme Rules and applicable laws. Review and update nominations after significant life events such as marriage, divorce, birth of a child, or death of a previously nominated beneficiary.
