Panic and confusion gripped St. Maurice Mwira High School in Matungu Constituency on Monday after a massive fire destroyed the boys’ dormitory, leaving hundreds of students shaken and uncertain about their accommodation.
The blaze, whose cause remains unknown, broke out within the school compound and spread rapidly through the dormitory, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. Students, teachers, members of the public, and emergency responders rushed to the scene in a desperate effort to contain the inferno.

Witnesses reported that the flames consumed the dormitory so quickly that there was little chance of salvaging personal belongings. Mattresses, uniforms, books, school boxes, and other valuables were reduced to ashes before firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.
Chief Principal Leonard Avugwi confirmed the destruction, noting that while property losses were extensive, no fatalities or injuries had been reported. “We are grateful that all our students are safe. Our immediate priority is ensuring their welfare as investigations into the cause of the fire commence,” he said.

Police officers, firefighters, and investigators visited the scene and immediately launched inquiries into the cause of the fire. Authorities urged members of the public to avoid speculation until official findings are released.
Parents streamed into the school seeking information about their children’s safety, while local leaders also visited to assess the destruction and express solidarity with the school community.
The loss of the dormitory is expected to pose significant accommodation challenges, with the school now working on temporary arrangements for the affected students as normal learning continues. The value of property destroyed has not yet been established, and investigations remain ongoing.
