A Grade 10 student at Thika High School has died following an alleged altercation with a fellow student over who would lead evening prayers.

Two students who were reportedly close friends and teammates at Thika High School are at the centre of a tragedy that has shocked the school community after one of them died following an alleged physical altercation over who would lead evening prayers.

Sixteen-year-old Grade 10 student Mohamed Hare died at Thika Level 5 Hospital on the evening of Friday, July 10, 2026, after he was allegedly involved in a fight with his classmate and close friend, Eric.

According to reports, the two students had maintained a close friendship and had recently represented Thika High School at the Central Region Games held at M-PESA Academy.

Sources indicate that on Friday evening, Eric selected Mohamed to lead the Muslim prayers before a disagreement reportedly arose between them.

What began as a dispute over the leadership of the prayers allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation during which the two students exchanged blows.

Witnesses said Mohamed suddenly collapsed during the altercation, prompting fellow students and school officials to rush him to Thika Level 5 Hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility.

Police investigations

The student involved in the incident has since been taken into police custody as a person of interest as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation.

Investigators are expected to interview students, teachers and school administrators to establish the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.

The incident has left family members, friends and the wider school community in shock, particularly because of the close relationship reportedly shared by the two students.

Mohamed’s family is demanding answers from the school administration regarding the events leading to his death, the response by school authorities after the altercation and the measures in place to safeguard learners.

Police have appealed for calm as investigations continue.
