The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to promptly recruit teachers to replace those retiring from service, warning that delays are disrupting learning and increasing the workload for teachers who remain.

Kenyenya Sub-county KNUT Executive Secretary Lucy Bwari Machuki made the appeal during the retirement ceremony of veteran teacher Abraham Kabaka Morebu of Kemoreko PEFA Comprehensive School in Kenyenya Sub-county.

Addressing teachers, parents and education stakeholders at the event, Machuki said the Commission should ensure vacancies created through retirement are filled immediately to maintain adequate staffing levels in schools.

“We are losing experienced teachers every term through natural attrition, yet replacements are not coming on time. This leaves learners with fewer teachers and strains the ones still in service,” she said.

Machuki noted that rural schools are particularly affected by delayed replacements, explaining that the retirement of a single teacher can leave an entire subject department understaffed.

She further called on the government to expedite the recruitment of Junior Secondary School teachers to ease pressure in Grades 7, 8 and 9, where demand for specialized subject teachers continues to rise under the Competency-Based Education (CBE).

The ceremony honoured Morebu for his 32 years of dedicated service in the teaching profession. Colleagues described him as a disciplined, committed and dependable educator who mentored many young teachers throughout his career.

In his farewell remarks, Morebu thanked colleagues, learners and members of the community for their support during his teaching career. He recalled serving at Nyamesocho, Nyamisaro and Emesa primary schools before his final posting to Kemoreko PEFA Comprehensive School.

Although retiring from active service, Morebu said he remains committed to supporting the education sector by mentoring young teachers whenever called upon.

“Teach with passion and integrity. The learners we mould today will shape the future of this nation,” he said.

The school’s administration, Board of Management, parents and KNUT officials presented the retiree with gifts and tokens of appreciation in recognition of his contribution to education.

Machuki also handed him a retirement package on behalf of KNUT Kenyenya Sub-county and assured retiring teachers of the union’s continued support.

Parents who attended the ceremony echoed KNUT’s concerns, saying delays in replacing retired teachers negatively affect learning, particularly in CBC and Junior Secondary, where specialized subject teachers are essential.

The event concluded with prayers, songs and tributes from learners, who praised Morebu for his guidance, mentorship and dedication both inside and outside the classroom.
