The Centre of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) says virtual laboratories could transform how Junior Secondary School learners study science and mathematics across the continent.

Speaking at Solian Girls High School in Koibatek Sub-County,Baringo county during closing ceremony of three day CEMASTEA training, Dr. Mary Sichangi said the digital labs are designed to bridge the gap for schools that lack physical science equipment.

“Virtual laboratories will be game changers in enhancing science and mathematics,” Dr. Sichangi stated. “They will allow learners to conduct experiments safely, repeatedly, and at a lower cost, even in resource-constrained schools.”

Dr. Sichangi added that the programme targets JSS schools region-wide to ensure rural and urban learners have similar opportunities.

Education stakeholders say a wider rollout could improve STEM performance and encourage more learners to pursue science-based careers.

According to county Director of Education in Baringo county Dr. Kosgei Rutto said 95 teachers have completed a 3-day training in Koibatek,Mogotio and Baringo South and another cohort of 144 teachers undertaking same training in Kapropita Girls on how to deploy virtual labs to learners, with a focus on JSS level.

He noted that only 206 out of 536 junior schools in Baringo County currently have physical laboratories, and that the current training targets public schools.

“Subsequent training for all remaking teachers is set for August but called on trained teachers to assist others with the concept
