A family in Kisii County is mourning the death of a Form Three student following a prolonged stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after she fell seriously ill.
The student, identified as Ruth Moraa of Kegati Secondary School, died after spending nine days in the ICU following surgery to treat a severe abdominal infection.
According to her mother, Ruth had complained of persistent stomach pain after returning home from school over the weekend. Concerned about her condition, she sought medical attention before the student returned to school on Tuesday.
Shortly after Ruth resumed classes, the school principal contacted her mother, informing her that the student’s condition had worsened and urging her to seek immediate medical care.
“Ruth had been complaining of stomach pain, so I took her to hospital for a scan to establish the cause of the illness,” her mother said.
Medical examinations reportedly revealed a significant accumulation of pus in Ruth’s abdomen. According to the family, doctors indicated the infection could have resulted from an earlier abdominal injury or trauma that had gone untreated.

“The doctors told us there was pus in her abdomen, possibly caused by a fall or a blow to the stomach that she may not have disclosed,” the grieving mother explained.
Ruth underwent surgery to remove the infection before being admitted to the ICU, where she remained under intensive care for nine days. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her illness.
“After the operation, she was taken back to the ICU, where she stayed for nine days before she sadly passed away,” her mother said.
The bereaved family is now appealing to well-wishers for financial support to offset a hospital bill amounting to Ksh926,000, saying they are unable to collect Ruth’s body for burial.
“We are appealing for financial assistance to help us clear the hospital bill so that we can collect her body and give her a dignified burial,” the mother pleaded.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged abdominal injury remain unclear.
