The latest funding announcement comes amid a significant surge in demand for university education. The number of students qualifying for direct university admission has risen from 69,155 in 2017 to 270,715 in 2025, marking a 292 per cent increase.

To accommodate the growing enrolment, the government has raised scholarship funding from Ksh18.4 billion in the 2025/2026 financial year to Ksh30.8 billion in the 2026/2027 financial year.
