The family of 21-year-old Elizabeth Ngina, a student at Thika Technical Training Institute, has called for a swift and thorough investigation into her brutal murder after her mutilated body was discovered in a rented house in Kiang’ombe Estate, Thika.

Police in Thika West Sub-County have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of the second-year Agricultural Extension student.

Her body, which had been decapitated and had several fingers severed, was found in a house believed to have been occupied by her boyfriend.

The incident has left Elizabeth’s family, friends and fellow students devastated, with relatives urging investigators to expedite their inquiries and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Speaking after the discovery of the body, Elizabeth’s uncle, Peter Mutunga, said the family had initially been informed that the student had been admitted to hospital after falling ill.

“We were called by Elizabeth’s parents and informed that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Thika had asked them to go to Thika Level 5 Hospital because their daughter was unwell and had been admitted there,” said Mutunga.

“Later, we were directed to report to the Thika West Sub-County Criminal Investigations offices on Monday morning, only to be informed of the horrifying incident that had befallen her. We are in pain and we want justice for Elizabeth,” he added.

Mutunga said investigators informed the family that the suspect, who is believed to have been romantically involved with the deceased, told police he had left the house on Tuesday and later returned to find it locked from the outside.

According to a statement recorded with police, the suspect allegedly used a spare key to gain entry into the room. Upon entering, he reportedly noticed that a washing basin placed beneath the bed was obstructing movement. After checking under the bed, he claimed to have discovered Elizabeth’s body.

Police officers from Thika Police Station who visited the scene found the body bearing severe injuries, including six missing fingers and multiple stab wounds.

Investigators were also informed by Elizabeth’s mother that she was aware of her daughter’s relationship and had previously advised the couple to end it.

A friend and classmate, Mary Mwongeri, described Elizabeth as a calm, friendly and trustworthy student whose death has deeply shaken those who knew her.

“When we spoke on Friday last week, she told me she would not make it to school,” said Mwongeri.

She said they later spoke again through a video call on Saturday, which turned out to be their final conversation.

“On Sunday we did not talk. Then another classmate called me and asked me to go and check on Elizabeth at her house. When I got there, I found police officers collecting her body. It was devastating,” she said.

Elizabeth’s parents, Cosmas Mulwa Karanja and Winfred Mulwa, were overwhelmed by grief and unable to speak as they mourned the loss of their firstborn daughter.

Through relatives, the family appealed to investigators to conduct comprehensive investigations and ensure all those involved in the killing are identified and prosecuted.
