Teachers retiring from the profession have been encouraged to continue using their experience and expertise in public service to guide communities rather than withdrawing from active engagement after leaving formal employment.

The call was made during the retirement ceremony of Joel Sangae of Maroo Comprehensive School.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Paul Akenga of Kisii University urged retired teachers to spend more time mentoring both young people and adults while helping future generations build on their legacy.

He said the wealth of knowledge, discipline and mentorship accumulated over decades should not end when a teacher leaves the classroom.

“Retirement is not a death sentence but a transition to a more active role in molding communities,” he said.

Dr. Akenga encouraged retirees to view themselves as custodians of wisdom whose contribution to society becomes even more valuable after formal employment.

Apart from teaching, Dr. Akenga outlined several areas where retired teachers can continue serving society.

He said they can mentor young people through youth empowerment programmes, guiding them on career choices, discipline, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Their administrative experience also makes them suitable candidates for school boards, community development projects, church leadership and social institutions.

He added that retired teachers can contribute to adult literacy programmes, agricultural extension initiatives and peacebuilding efforts at the community level.

According to Dr. Akenga, their communication skills and the trust they command within society place them in a strong position to mediate disputes, mobilize communities for development projects and advocate for education and health programmes.

Dr. Akenga further encouraged retired teachers to document their experiences through writing, storytelling and oral history.

He noted that such records help preserve local heritage while inspiring younger generations.

He also called on county governments and community organizations to establish platforms through which retired teachers can continue contributing meaningfully to society.

Support from families

Mrs. Grace Nyaboke, a retired nurse who attended the ceremony, urged spouses of retired teachers to remain supportive as their husbands adjust to a new phase of life.

She observed that ageing sometimes brings forgetfulness and encouraged families to maintain order and routines that promote comfort and stability.

“Set a good order in the house that will help your husband well. The Bible tells us to serve them at all times as the heads of the household and the immediate community,” she said.

Tribute to Joel Sangae

The ceremony brought together teachers, learners, parents and local leaders who paid tribute to Joel Sangae for his years of dedicated service.

Speakers described him as a disciplined educator who positively influenced many lives throughout his teaching career.
