Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma has highlighted key achievements in the education sector since assuming office, saying the county is on course to witness significant transformation through investments in higher education infrastructure.

Speaking at the county headquarters, Mutuma called on education stakeholders to support ongoing initiatives aimed at expanding access to university education and stimulating socio-economic development.

The governor said his administration is overseeing the development of a mini city at Mariene University Campus in Abogeta Constituency at an estimated cost of KSh5.6 billion.

“It will transform the region positively both economically and socially. Approximately KSh5.6 billion will be used to complete the project featuring malls, supermarkets and other modern amenities at Mariene University Campus. The project was advertised before being awarded to a contractor,” said Mutuma.

He noted that the project is expected to create employment opportunities, attract investment and accelerate development in the surrounding areas.

Expansion of university education

Mutuma said Tharaka University recently established a university campus in Tigania East Constituency, a move he described as a major boost to higher education access in the region.

According to the governor, the institution is expected to spur economic growth and improve the livelihoods of residents in the area.

He further revealed that Chuka University is spearheading the establishment of Kiegoi University Campus in Igembe South Constituency.

“I have already given the green light for the establishment of a branch of the Catholic University within the county,” said Mutuma.

The governor urged education stakeholders, leaders and residents to work together in supporting the ongoing projects.

He said collaboration among stakeholders would be critical in achieving the county’s education goals and ensuring that learners benefit from expanded opportunities in higher education.
