The governor vowed that all those behind the Chemelil Academy attack would be identified, exposed and prosecuted without fear or favour.
Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has strongly condemned the attack on Chemelil Academy by a group of youth, describing it as an assault on education, decency, and the rule of law.
In a statement, Nyong’o termed the incident an act of “primitive lawlessness” that has no place in a civilized society.
“That young man, endowed with energy and the capacity to earn an honest living, can decide or be mobilized to terrorize parents, teachers, education officials and service providers within a learning institution in broad daylight is both shameful and unacceptable,” he said.
The governor commended the National Police Service and the security team in Muhoroni for the swift arrest of three suspects linked to the attack.
“Their prompt action sends a clear message that criminality will not be tolerated in Kisumu County. I urge investigators to pursue all those involved, regardless of their status or influence, and ensure that the full force of the law is brought to bear on them,” Nyong’o said.

He emphasized that educational institutions are sacred spaces for learning and social advancement, adding that anyone who attacks them is an enemy of progress.
“Kisumu will not surrender its schools, its children or its future to gangs and hired hooligans,” he stated.
Nyong’o further revealed that he had held consultations with Kisumu County Commissioner Mohammed Ramadhan Mwabudzo and the county security leadership over the growing threat posed by organized criminal gangs and what he termed “goonism” in the county.
He assured residents that authorities were united in their resolve to dismantle criminal networks and restore public confidence and security.
“The young people involved and being misused in this menace should be warned that they will bear individual responsibility for their actions,” he said.
The governor vowed that all those behind the Chemelil Academy attack would be identified, exposed and prosecuted without fear or favour.
Following the incident, police launched a manhunt and, acting on intelligence, arrested three suspects identified as Benard Ouma, Thomas Onyango Ouma and Walter Owa, also known as Teddy Obul, at different locations within Chemelil. Efforts to trace additional suspects who remain at large are ongoing.
During the attack, the gang allegedly robbed the school’s head teacher and deputy head teacher of a total of Ksh12,000. They also damaged property and assaulted a supplier who was at the institution.
School principal Samira Abiai confirmed that no learners were injured during the incident.
