Bonchari Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Charles Onchoke has expressed concern over the continued burning and closure of schools in Kisii County, calling for immediate intervention from the Ministry of Education to restore normal learning.

Speaking during the handover of eight classrooms constructed through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) at Nyamerako DEB Comprehensive School, Dr. Onchoke said the ongoing destruction of learning institutions was threatening education progress and undermining public investment.

He noted that government resources channelled into the education sector should not be allowed to go to waste, especially at a time when the country is focusing on strengthening human capital for industrial and economic growth.

“We cannot afford to watch as schools are destroyed and learning disrupted. This undermines years of development efforts and delays the future of our learners,” he said.

The MP further urged the Ministry of Education to take swift action to address the unrest and restore order in affected institutions.

Meanwhile, attention has also been drawn to developments in the constituency following the closure of St. Paul’s Igonga Secondary School after a reported fire incident, with questions emerging over the pace of follow-up and intervention by local leadership.

School arson cases have continued to pose significant challenges to the education sector, disrupting learning programmes and forcing students to miss valuable classroom time. The incidents also lead to the destruction of infrastructure such as classrooms, laboratories, and learning materials built through public funds, often requiring costly reconstruction.

Education stakeholders further warn that repeated attacks on schools may heighten insecurity concerns, affect student enrolment, and contribute to increased dropout rates as parents and learners lose confidence in the safety of learning institutions.
