MMU students storm Magadi Road over abrupt exam postponement

MMU students have taken to the street to protest what they term as abrupt exam postponement by the University administration.

Students of Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) staged protests on Monday, June 8, 2026 after the university administration abruptly postponed end of semester examinations that were scheduled to commence on the same day, throwing hundreds of students into uncertainty.

The demonstrations quickly spilled onto Magadi Road, a key arterial route linking Ongata Rongai and Kiserian to Nairobi, as irate students blocked traffic and demanded an immediate explanation from the university management. Police officers were deployed to the scene to contain the situation and restore the flow of traffic along the busy road.

The postponement was communicated through an interoffice memorandum dated June 8, 2026, signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation Prof. Dr. Eng. Livingstone Ngoo.

The memo, addressed to all Faculty Deans, Directors and Chairs of Departments (CODs), cited “challenges being experienced in the administration of examinations” without specifying the nature of those challenges.

“Please be informed that, due to challenges being experienced in the administration of examinations, the scheduled examinations will be delayed,” the memo read in part, adding that students should “await further communication.”

No new examination date was provided in the communication, a development that students said was unacceptable given that many had already made preparations and in some cases traveled to the campus specifically for the exams.

The university management expressed regret over the disruption and appealed for understanding and cooperation from all parties, but offered no timeline for when the examinations would be rescheduled.
