Students at Machakos University have suspended a planned demonstration following the arrest of a suspect linked to the killing of student Stanley Kathungu and two of his friends.

In a statement dated June 7, 2026, the Students Association of Machakos University (SAMU), led by President Sully Otieno and Secretary General Paul Sumba Moses, confirmed the suspension of the protest, saying the decision followed the arrest of the individual who had accused the three victims.

The students had planned the demonstration to demand justice after the brutal killings, which sparked widespread outrage within the university community and calls for accountability and due process.

“This decision comes after the individual who had accused the three students was apprehended on Friday. As a result, investigations into the matter are currently ongoing, and we believe it is important to allow the relevant authorities sufficient time to complete their work,” the statement read.

Despite calling off the protest, the student leadership maintained that they will continue to closely follow the case and push for justice. SAMU issued a 21-day ultimatum to the relevant authorities, urging swift, fair, and transparent investigations.

“We urge all students to remain calm, united, and law-abiding during this period. Let us continue to stand together in pursuit of truth and justice while respecting the ongoing investigative process,” the leaders said.

They added that if no satisfactory progress is made within the 21-day period, the association will reassess its position and communicate the next course of action.

Police had not issued an official update on the investigations by the time of publication.
