The incoming Kisii County Commissioner, James Kamau, has called on parents and teachers to work closely with other education stakeholders to uplift education standards in the region.

Speaking during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations held in Kenyenya, Mr. Kamau said education remains a top priority for the national government. He noted that President Dr. William Ruto is strongly committed to education, which is why the government continues to invest heavily in programmes aimed at improving the lives of young people.

“The Head of State values education. That is why the government is investing significant resources to uplift the lives of the youth, who are the future leaders of this country,” he said.

The celebrations were presided over by Kisii County Governor Simba Arati, who pledged to improve the county’s feeder road network to enhance access to schools.

Governor Arati stressed that better feeder roads directly support learning by reducing the time and distance learners travel to school, making it easier for students in remote areas to attend classes regularly.

He noted that reliable roads also enable school buses and suppliers to reach institutions on time, ensuring that food, learning materials, and other essential supplies are delivered without delay.

During the rainy season, passable roads help reduce absenteeism caused by flooded or muddy pathways and improve the safety of learners, especially girls, travelling to and from school.

The event was attended by political leaders, government officials, and principals from schools across the area, led by Kenyenya Secondary School Board Chairman David Osoro.

Equitable distribution

Mr. Osoro called for equitable distribution of National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) resources to enable all schools to compete favourably in both academic and co-curricular activities.

“Equal support will give every school an opportunity to nurture talent and improve performance across the board,” he said.

Education officials in Kisii have consistently linked improved infrastructure and equitable funding to better attendance and academic performance.

The county government’s commitment to upgrading feeder roads, coupled with calls for fair funding, is expected to ease transport challenges and create a more level playing field for learners across the county.
