A former Kenyan secondary school teacher has attracted widespread attention after leaving behind a secure teaching career to pursue a new profession in Germany’s hospitality industry.
Linda Almasi, who taught Kiswahili and History at Kaya Tiwi high school in Kwale County, made the life-changing decision in 2023 to resign from her teaching position and relocate to Germany through the Ausbildung apprenticeship programme.
Her move has sparked conversations among many Kenyans about career transitions, opportunities abroad, and the pursuit of personal growth.
Almasi, who hails from Kitale, said that while teaching was a fulfilling profession, she felt the need to explore opportunities that offered greater career progression and financial stability.
According to her, the decision was not made overnight but came after careful consideration of her long-term goals and aspirations.
To prepare for the move, she invested significant time and effort in learning the German language, eventually attaining B1 proficiency.

She also navigated the rigorous visa application process, which required patience, determination and commitment.
After successfully relocating to Germany, Almasi joined a three-year hospitality training programme in the city of Essen.
The programme combines classroom learning with practical work experience, allowing participants to gain industry skills while earning an income.
Today, she works as a front office agent with Motel One Group, a leading international hotel chain.
In her role, she is responsible for welcoming guests, handling reservations and ensuring visitors enjoy a positive experience during their stay.
Despite switching careers, Almasi says teaching remains close to her heart. She believes the communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills she developed as an educator continue to serve her well in the hospitality sector.
Looking ahead, she hopes to combine her experience in education and hospitality to support mentorship and training initiatives aimed at helping young people navigate career opportunities both locally and internationally.
Her journey serves as an example of resilience, adaptability and the willingness to embrace change.
Almasi hopes her story will encourage others to pursue their ambitions fearlessly and remain open to opportunities that can transform their lives.
