The Uasin Gishu County Government has intensified sensitization efforts on fire safety mechanisms aimed at containing possible fire disasters across schools in the region.

The move comes as the County Fire Brigade Department continues to engage stakeholders on safety awareness, vigilance, and preventive measures as part of broader efforts to significantly reduce fire incidents and related risks.

Acting Director of the Fire and Rescue Section, Fredrick Serem, and Chief Fire Officer David Sitati said the initiative seeks to strengthen partnerships between the Fire Directorate, which falls under the Department of Roads, Transport and Public Works, and key institutions including schools, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and community organizations.

The two officials noted that collaborative efforts are essential in building a strong safety network that enhances community preparedness and promotes public safety.

“We believe that fire safety is a shared responsibility. Through partnerships with schools, businesses, and security agencies, we can create a more informed and prepared community,” said Serem.

Sitati emphasized that public awareness remains one of the most effective ways of preventing fire outbreaks and minimizing losses.

“Our goal is to ensure residents understand fire hazards, know how to respond during emergencies, and take preventive measures seriously,” he said.

On Thursday, the county fire brigade team conducted an intensive fire safety training programme for teachers and pupils from Little Lamps School at the Eldoret City Fire Station.

During the training, officers emphasized the importance of fire awareness and prevention for people of all ages, saying early education on safety practices can save lives and property.

Participants were taken through practical lessons on identifying fire hazards, responding during emergencies, and using basic fire safety equipment.

The officers explained that the county-led initiative is also designed to empower community members with the skills to identify and report suspicious activities to relevant authorities while fostering a safer, cohesive, and vigilant society.

“The goal is to build a community that is informed, alert, and ready to protect itself against fire-related emergencies,” the officials stated.

Residents were further encouraged to make use of the county fire emergency hotline numbers — 0710 646464, 053 2061185, and 0706 389888 — to report fire incidents and enable rapid emergency response.

The officers spoke during the fire safety training session in Eldoret that brought together residents, teachers, and students from various schools across the region.

County officials reaffirmed their commitment to expanding awareness programmes to more institutions and communities, noting that prevention and preparedness remain key pillars in disaster management.

The sensitization campaign comes amid growing concern over fire incidents in residential areas, businesses, and institutions, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and observe safety guidelines at all times.
