Bomachoge Borabu MP Obadiah Barongo has mourned the 16 students of Utumishi Girls School in Nakuru County who perished in a dormitory fire outbreak.
Speaking at his Riyabu home this morning, the lawmaker said he received the news with profound sadness and wished those who sustained injuries during escape attempts a quick recovery.
He also prayed for strength and acceptance for the parents who lost their children.
The fire occurred in the early hours of Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County. According to police and the Kenya Red Cross, the blaze started at around 1:00 a.m. while students were asleep in the Meline Waithera dormitory block. The school, located about 77 miles west of Nairobi, had approximately 220 students from Grade 10, Form Three, and Form Four in the affected dormitory.
Sixteen students were confirmed dead, while between 74 and 79 others sustained injuries. Most of the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

By Thursday afternoon, 71 had been treated and discharged, while seven remained admitted. Emergency responders from the Kenya Red Cross, E-Plus ambulance services, and the police worked through the night to contain the fire and evacuate students.
