Govt pledges full support for Utumishi Girls fire tragedy victims

Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visits injured Utumishi Girls Academy students in hospital following the deadly dormitory fire tragedy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

The government has pledged full support to families affected by the devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where 16 students have been confirmed dead and several others injured.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki led the national message of condolence, describing the incident as a painful national tragedy that has left the country in mourning.

He said the government was working closely with emergency teams, medical personnel, and education authorities to ensure all affected students receive urgent care and psychosocial support.

Authorities have intensified investigations to establish the cause of the fire, which broke out in the early hours of the night and rapidly engulfed part of the school dormitory.

Security and education officials are expected to release preliminary findings once forensic assessments are complete.

The government has also assured parents that measures are being taken to account for all learners and secure the school environment as recovery efforts continue.

Hospitals treating the injured students have been placed on high alert to ensure specialised care for the victims.

As the nation grapples with the loss, leaders have called for calm and urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
