Students injured in the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, have been airlifted to Nairobi for specialised medical treatment following the deadly incident that claimed 16 lives.
The evacuation exercise was carried out early Thursday as health officials moved to ensure critically injured learners receive advanced care in referral hospitals equipped to handle severe burns and trauma cases.
The students were first stabilised at local health facilities in Nakuru before being transferred to the capital.
The fire, which broke out in the school dormitory, left the nation in shock and mourning, with families still coming to terms with the loss of their children. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the inferno.
Education and Interior Security officials have since visited the school and hospitals where the injured students are admitted, as pressure mounts for stricter enforcement of safety standards in boarding schools across the country.
Meanwhile, psychosocial support teams have been deployed to assist affected students, teachers, and families as recovery and counselling efforts continue.
