Kenyans have been thrown into shock and grief following a devastating dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy Senior School that has left over 10 students dead and 74 nursing injuries.
While confirming the incident, Rift Valley Regional Commander Samuel Ndanyi said that so far 10 students have been confirmed dead and 74 are nursing injuries following the dormitory fire at the school.
However insider sources reveals that the number is about 16 fatalities with numerous injuries.
The fire is said to have broken out in the early hours of the morning, plunging families, students, and the wider public into mourning as authorities race to establish the full extent of the tragedy.
According to preliminary reports from the Kenya Red Cross, the blaze may have started at around 1:00 a.m. but was not officially reported until approximately 3:30 a.m., raising serious concerns over a possible delayed emergency response and challenges in containing the inferno.
Outside the school compound, scenes of anguish unfolded as anxious parents and relatives gathered in large numbers seeking information about their children. Many were visibly distraught as police officers restricted access to the institution, allowing only a limited number of people inside while rescue teams and authorities conducted headcounts and emergency assessments.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that some dormitory exits may have failed to open during the emergency, potentially trapping students inside the burning building. Authorities have yet to verify the claims as investigations continue.
The tragedy has reignited national debate over the state of safety standards in Kenyan boarding schools, particularly in the wake of the deadly Endarasha Academy fire that killed 21 students. Following that incident, the Ministry of Education directed all schools to implement stricter fire safety measures and improve emergency preparedness.
Questions are now emerging over whether Utumishi Girls Academy complied with those directives and whether lapses in enforcement or preparedness may have contributed to the disaster.
Government agencies, emergency responders, and education officials are expected to issue further updates as investigations into the cause of the fire and the number of casualties continue.
