Widespread drug abuse among youth is destroying society, church cleric warns

Most Rev. Antonio Ocharo has warned against rising drug abuse among youth and urged graduates to embrace self-employment, agriculture and Gospel outreach.

The Anglican Church priest, Most Reverend Antonio Ocharo, has decried the rising use of drugs among the youth, attributing it to lack of self-discipline and disregard for God’s laws.

Speaking during a church service, Rev. Ocharo warned that substance abuse was eroding the moral fabric of society and destroying the future of many young people.

He urged the youth, especially university graduates, to focus on becoming impactful members of society by changing their attitude towards careers and service.

According to the cleric, many young people still believe that white-collar jobs — which have become increasingly scarce — are the only pathway to success.

Instead, he encouraged them to utilise the knowledge and skills they have acquired to venture into agriculture and other income-generating businesses.

Rev. Ocharo appealed to youth from Kisii and Nyamira counties to emulate the life of Jesus Christ, who rose from a humble background through obedience, discipline and hard work.

He said that through humility and diligence, Jesus was elevated by God, adding that the same path remains open to young people who choose discipline over destructive behaviour.

Church role

The cleric also emphasised the role of Christianity in promoting education among the youth.

He noted that the church has historically played a key role in establishing schools and supporting learning institutions, and said the mission should continue.

According to him, faith and education complement each other because knowledge equips young people to serve both God and society more effectively.

He encouraged churches to partner with schools, sponsor needy students and mentor learners to remain focused on academics and moral values.

Call for structured youth programmes

Rev. Ocharo said young people are well positioned to spread the Gospel because of their energy and ability to connect with fellow youth.

He challenged them to begin Gospel outreach from their homes and extend it to the wider society, making evangelism part of their daily lives.

The priest further appealed to the government to establish clear and structured youth empowerment programmes instead of allowing young people to be manipulated by politicians.

He criticised leaders who allegedly lure unemployed youth into drinking dens through handouts, saying such actions expose them to substance abuse and hopelessness.

He said organised training and self-development programmes would help equip youth with practical skills, purpose and a sense of responsibility.

“If you are living in Kisii and Nyamira, come to me for advice on how you can champion the work of God while you are still a youth,” he said.
