Bungoma County Woman Representative and former Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Gender Secretary, Catherine Wambilianga, has criticized teachers for rushing to report to exam marking centres despite directives from their union.

Speaking at a public gathering, Wambilianga addressed the ongoing concerns over delayed payments by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to exam markers. She emphasized that teachers should adhere to union guidance, including delaying their reporting for marking duties, to strengthen collective bargaining efforts.

“I have weighed in on the ongoing issue of delayed payments to teachers who marked KNEC exams. I advise teacher-markers to always heed union calls and delay reporting for marking duties by a few days when summoned,” she said.

Wambilianga noted that early reporting by teachers undermines the union’s ability to advocate effectively for their rights and timely compensation.

“I am aware that teachers who marked national exams have not yet received their payments. However, allow me to correct you: whenever the union advises you to hold on for at least two days, many of you report even earlier,” she added.

She urged teachers to exercise patience and solidarity, stressing that unity is essential in pushing the government to address their concerns.

“If you are instructed by the union to stay back and not report to work, please do so—even if it is just for two days. Do not be the first to rush to the marking centre. The government will not respond if you fail to stand together,” she said.

Her sentiments come amid teachers’ outcry following their delay payments which has now run for six months down the line.
