Workers at Moi University have staged protests over delayed salaries, urging the national government to step in and resolve the deepening financial crisis at the institution.

Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, officials from the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) said lecturers and other employees have yet to receive their March pay, leaving many unable to meet basic needs amid the tough economic climate.

UASU Moi University Chapter Secretary General Robert Otweri criticized the university management for allegedly issuing threats to staff instead of addressing their grievances.

He noted that unpaid salaries, unremitted statutory deductions, and other pending obligations have now ballooned to an estimated Ksh10 billion.

Otweri warned that continued delays risk paralyzing operations at the institution, as workers increasingly frustrated with what they term as unfulfilled promises and lack of transparency from the administration.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mary Chepkemoi, the chapter Secretary General of the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), said a return-to-work formula signed last year has not been implemented.

The agreement was endorsed by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala.

Chepkemoi argued that failure to honour the deal has eroded trust between staff and the government, calling for urgent intervention to stabilize the university and safeguard the welfare of employees.

The workers now say they will escalate their action if their grievances remain unresolved.
