Christine Agutu, a teacher at Lamu Girls High School, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to educators across the country who supported her bid for the national chairperson position in the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) national elections, which were held yesterday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Gymnasium.
Agutu mounted a spirited and closely watched challenge against the incumbent chairperson, Omboko Milemba, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Emuhaya constituency.
The election attracted nationwide attention within the teachers’ fraternity, reflecting growing interest in union leadership and reform-driven representation.
In the final results announced at the Kasarani venue, Milemba garnered 1,432 votes while Agutu secured 543 votes. The outcome was widely seen as a competitive race that demonstrated strong democratic engagement among delegates and the increasing appetite for change within the union.
Following the announcement, Agutu issued a message of appreciation to teachers who supported her campaign.
She thanked delegates for their trust, encouragement and belief in her leadership vision throughout the election period, noting that the experience had been both humbling and encouraging.
The teacher especially acknowledged the 543 delegates who voted for her, describing their support as a powerful motivation to continue advocating for reforms that strengthen teacher welfare and improve union governance.

“Although the outcome was not what we had hoped for, the spirit of reform is alive, strong and unstoppable,” Agutu stated, reaffirming her commitment to remain active in teacher advocacy and union matters.
