In a remarkable display of youthful ambition, a second-year student at Kibabii University in Bungoma County Ruto Emmanuel, 21, is defying the odds to pursue his dream of becoming the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mt Elgon Constituency.
Raised by grandmother in a humble household, Ruto’s journey to the top has been marked by perseverance and determination.
Ruto who is pursuing a degree in Education, has already made waves on campus politics, having been elected as the Security and Accommodations Secretary. His leadership skills and passion for service have earned him recognition among his peers, who see him as a future leader.
He also eyeing the University presidency to boost his ambitions towards the national politics.
His educational journey began at Tendet Primary School, where he laid the foundation for his future academic pursuits. He later joined Kapsokwony Boys for his secondary education, before proceeding to Kibabii University. Despite facing financial struggles, he has remained focused on his goals, relying on well-wishers to fund his education.
With focus now on the MP seat, his ambitions go beyond his own personal achievements. He wants to make a difference in the lives of the people of Mt Elgon Constituency, and is determined to be their voice in Parliament.
“I had to sell everything I had to fund my ambition since politics isn’t for faint-hearted,” Ruto said in an interview. “I’m not afraid of challenges, I’m ready to work hard and serve the people.”
His path to politics hasn’t been without its obstacles. During campaigns, Ruto noted that he faced stiff competition from opposition who sought to derail his efforts through violence, but remained undeterred, using his passion and determination to push forward.
Another challenge he’s facing is the apparent lack of support from local leaders. “Other candidates are approaching their leaders at home and they’re getting assistance, but our own leaders from MCA to MP, they ignore you,” Ruto lamented.
“I want to make Mt Elgon a home for every constituent, regardless of their background or political affiliation,” he said.
