Soyiantet elected KNUT Narok Branch boss, pledges to fight for teachers’ welfare

Teachers from across Narok County on Saturday March 7, converged at William Ole Ntimama Stadium to participate in the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Narok branch elections, culminating in the election of a new team of leaders set to steer the union’s activities and champion the welfare of educators in the region.

The elections, which drew a strong turnout, saw Simiren Soyiantet elected as executive secretary with 1,179 votes, decisively defeating Moses Kamakei, who garnered 251 votes.

Speaking after his victory, Soyiantet expressed gratitude to teachers for their trust and emphasized the need for unity.

“I want to sincerely thank the teachers of Narok for the confidence they have shown in us through this election. Now that the contest is over, it is time to unite and focus on strengthening our union and addressing the challenges facing teachers,” he said.

As the branch’s chief administrator, Soyiantet will coordinate union activities and represent teachers in negotiations and policy matters.

In the race for chairman, Newton Koech emerged victorious with 1,143 votes, while Lorna Chepkemoi trailed with 274 votes. The treasurer position was won by Richard Kimiriny, who received 938 votes against his closest challenger, Wilson Tololo’s 485.

Other key positions included vice Secretary, won by Henry Passiany with 1,243 votes over Barno’s 342 votes; Vice treasurer, secured by Dan Mayone with 1,077 votes against Omwoyo’s 347and women representative, where Ann Saramei prevailed with 1,032 votes over Ann Bor, who received 386 votes.

The newly elected leadership has pledged to prioritize teachers’ welfare, strengthen the union’s presence in the county, and enhance engagement with education stakeholders.

Members expressed optimism that the leadership will build on unity and advocate effectively for teachers’ professional interests.

The elections at William ole Ntimama Stadium marked a significant milestone for the Narok KNUT branch, reflecting a vibrant democratic process and a renewed mandate to serve educators across the county.
