Schools across Kajiado County have raised alarm over a rising wave of fraudsters impersonating school administrators to issue fake tenders and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

In a notice circulated to members of the public Olkeri Secondary School reported that unknown individuals have been calling members of the public while posing as school officials and using the school’s name to solicit money under the guise of awarding tenders. The scammers are said to be impersonating both the school secretary and the principal.

“We wish to declare that we have not issued any tenders as a school, and we caution members of the public and parents not to fall for this scam,” read a statement signed by the school’s Board of Management (BOM) chairman.

Principal Dionisio Mwaniki confirmed receiving several complaints from people who were targeted by the fraudsters. While some were able to detect the scam early, one individual was tricked into sending money.

Mwaniki said he has cautioned parents to remain alert and verify any suspicious communication directly with the school.

One victim, Ann Wamboi, a parent at the institution, explained how she was contacted by a woman claiming to be a supplier to the school on Tuesday. The caller convinced her to send money to supposedly complete a food supply transaction.

“The woman knew everything about me and the position I hold in the school,” Wamboi said. She attempted to reach the principal for verification but, when unable to get through, proceeded to send KSh 10,000.

The incident was reported to Kiserian Police Station, where investigations into the scam are underway.

Several other members of the public have since reported receiving similar calls from individuals posing as administrators from various schools in the county.

Authorities are advising parents and the general public to remain vigilant and to verify any tender related information directly with school administrations to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
