Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba has announced that the government is undertaking a nationwide harmonisation of hardship areas to create a central registry for gazettement.

The move, revealed during a local news channel’s education segment in Kilifi on Tuesday, September 23, seeks to end inconsistencies in hardship allowance payments between teachers and other public servants.

Ogamba said the lack of a unified list has caused conflicts, with some areas recognised as hardship zones by the public service but not by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

He noted that harmonisation will ensure allowances are fairly distributed across the board, especially in regions where teachers and learners struggle under difficult conditions.

His remarks were supported by Principal Secretary for Basic Education Dr. Julius Bitok, who admitted that Kilifi faces unique challenges such as poverty, cultural practices, early marriages, and long distances between schools.

The concerns come in the wake of Kilifi’s poor 2024 KCSE performance, where only two students managed an A plain and nearly half scored D+ and below.
