Celebrated literary icon Professor Ngugi wa Thiong’o will be inducted into the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) Hall of Fame during the 26th Nairobi International Book Fair (NIBF), set to begin on Wednesday, September 24, at the Sarit Expo Centre in Westlands, Nairobi.
Prof. Ngugi, who passed away on May 28 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 87, was among Africa’s most celebrated authors and scholars, and taught at several universities abroad.
According to NIBF Chairperson Mary Maina, Ngugi is being honored for his monumental contribution to Kenyan literature and education.
Ngugi’s novels, plays, and essays have tackled issues of colonialism, identity, cultural conflict, and social justice.

Beyond his writing, he strongly championed the use of African indigenous languages, insisting that language was central to cultural liberation.
Although his passing marked the end of an era in African literature, Ngugi’s works continue to inspire generations of writers and readers across the globe.
His recognition at this year’s fair highlights his enduring impact on literature and education in Kenya and beyond.
