A grade 8 girl is nursing injuries after she was attacked with a knife by her 16-year-old friend while they were fetching water in Siongiroi, Bomet County.

The shocking incident occurred on Monday when the two girls, both minors, reportedly got into an altercation.

It is reported that the friend suddenly drew a knife and slashed the victim on both hands, causing deep cuts.

Confirming the incident, Chepalungu Sub-County Police Commander Phanton Analo said investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack.

“The suspect has been arrested and booked at the local police station. She will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete,” said Analo.

The injured girl, who is a 14-year old, was rushed to Chemagel Health Centre where she received treatment before being discharged.

The incident adds to a growing list of violent attacks involving minors in the region. Authorities and community leaders have expressed concern over the rise in cases of school-age children turning to violence, often using dangerous weapons.

Church leaders in the area have warned that the trend, if left unchecked, could erode the social fabric and compromise the safety of children.

“We are deeply concerned. Our children are increasingly resorting to violence to resolve disputes. This is a call to action for parents, schools, and the community,” said Rev. Daniel Kirui, a local clergy member.

In recent years, Bomet County has witnessed a disturbing rise in juvenile violence. In 2021, a Form Four student was fatally stabbed in a bar in Siongiroi during a quarrel over a woman. Just a year later, a 16-year-old girl was killed by her friend at Mulot trading centre following a disagreement over the ownership of a memory card.

Early this year, a 19-year-old student succumbed to injuries after being stabbed by a fellow learner at Aisaik, Bomet Central.

Police are now calling on parents and guardians to be more vigilant and to monitor the behavior of their children closely.

“This is not just a police issue; it’s a societal problem that requires collective responsibility,” added Commander Analo
