A very big number of qualified teachers are yet to apply for the recently advertised promotion slots by the Teachers Service Commission, (TSC). The teachers who some spoke to Education News over the weekend, cited frustrations over what they termed as an exercise that doesn’t yield to anything after several attempts.

Majority of the teachers who said are not ready to apply for the promotions are those in job groups C1 and have overstayed in the same job group for over six years. The tutors said, the employer plans to promote only 4683 of them yet this is the job group that has the highest population of teachers.

“Why should I waste time and get regrets like I have been getting 3 times I have tried the interviews?” asked Kemuma a teacher from Nyamira County.

Over the weekend at Our Lady of Peace Secondary School in Nandi hills, Knut’s First national deputy treasurer raised concerns over government’s failure to allocate enough funds for the promotion of teachers. Nyamwada said that TSC should be given enough funds so that their members who have stagnated for long can realise meaningful promotions.

Some of the frustrated teachers from Eldoret said they were not ready to apply for the slots that are already predetermined.

“Already the commission has pronounced itself through the published guidelines. This year’s promotions are a preserve of those who are exiting the payroll anytime and not for everyone”, commented Sutter,a teacher at Soy.

The teachers further advised the commission not to waste time by subjecting them to unnecessary document verification in the name of interviews but to promote teachers based on the age statistics they have with them.

“There’s no need of coming up with a scoring guide that demarcate our years and length of stay in a job group when the commission has all these data. Why can’t they save time and money by promoting us without all the interview drama?” asked Mwalule from Malava in Kakamega County.

TSC has advertised for promotional slots for 21,313 teachers for the financial year 2025/26.Today marks the end of the application through the commission’s website

Many teachers who have not applied are implored to try their luck.
