Hundreds of mourners, including top officials from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), gathered at Bwichina Village in Shinyalu Subcounty to pay their last respects to retired teacher Arnold Muyeko Shihunwa, who was celebrated for his contributions to education and the church.
KNUT National Second Vice Chairperson Aggrey described the late Mwalimu Shihunwa as “a father to many in the profession,” noting that his mentorship shaped the careers of numerous educators, including Patrick Aluchio, BEC Central of KNUT Kakamega East Branch.

In his tribute, Aggrey reaffirmed the union’s commitment to championing teachers’ rights and urged the government to fully implement the signed Collective Bargaining Agreement. He also called on parents to prioritise education as “the most valuable long-term investment” for their children.
The burial was attended by senior KNUT leaders, including Maurice Chalenga (NEC Western), Patrick Chungani (Executive Secretary, Kakamega East), Mulinya (Executive Secretary, Kakamega South), Nelson Ilamoka (Chairman, Kakamega East), and Roberts Mandillah (Executive Secretary, Bungoma East).
Shihunwa, remembered for his decades of dedicated service and moral guidance, leaves behind a lasting legacy in Kenya’s education sector.
