Goibei Girls High School from Vihiga County emerged as the undisputed champions in the folk music category at the 97th Kenya Music Festival, held at Kaaga Girls High School in Meru.
The school clinched the top spot in every folk item they presented, impressing adjudicators with authentic renditions of Pokot, Marakwet, and traditional Turkana melodies. The performances were so convincing that judges reportedly found it difficult to distinguish the students from actual cultural troupes.
Their victory has earned them an invitation to perform at a gala hosted by the Head of State, a rare honor the team says they are eager to seize.
Chief Principal and Music Patron Dr. Rose Koech, credited for reviving the school’s artistic excellence, said the win was the result of discipline, cultural pride, and expert coaching. She arranged for the students to work with a trainer deeply versed in the traditions they represented.

Many of the group’s members hail from Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet, a factor they say gave their performances depth and authenticity.
“Our madam has been our pillar of strength,” the students said. “We could not disappoint her. We are now preparing to perform before the Head of State, and we thank God for this milestone.”
Goibei Girls High School is renowned for its success in folk music, with this latest win further cementing its legacy.
