The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has officially appointed Tenwek High School as the mentoring institution to oversee the construction of Bomet High School in Bomet Central Sub-County, marking a significant milestone in efforts to expand access to quality secondary education in the region.
In a letter dated July 29, 2025 and signed by Amb. (Prof.) Julius Bitok, the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, the ministry confirmed that the project will be implemented under the Transition Infrastructure Grant (TIG) in the 2024/2025 Supplementary Budget III.
A total of Ksh 50 million has already been disbursed to the school account to kick start the project.

“Tenwek High School’s Board of Management (BoM) will be responsible for managing the entire project from tendering, construction, to the final handover of the institution.” Reads part of the letter.
The school will also liaise with relevant stakeholders to identify and secure a suitable site, procure necessary master plans and designs, and ensure full compliance with public procurement laws.
In his directive, Prof. Bitok emphasized the need for transparency and accountability.
“You are required to discharge this additional responsibility efficiently, professionally, transparently and with integrity so that our Ministry and the entire Government gets value for money for all goods and services procured.” Reads part of the letter seen by Education News.
Despite the official appointment and release of funds, the project has not been without controversy.
Last week, Members of Parliament (MPs) raised concerns after it emerged that Bomet High School had received Ksh 50 million despite lacking physical presence, formal registration, land documentation, building plans, or an established BoM.
Lawmakers flagged the school as one of several questionable projects listed in the Ministry’s allocations, prompting queries over the accountability of public funds.

Bomet Central MP Richard Kilel, who had earlier petitioned President William Ruto to support the school’s construction, defended the initiative.
In a Facebook post, Kilel thanked the President for honoring his pledge to allocate Ksh 50 million during a past visit to the county.
He clarified that the Ministry, following consultations, opted to channel the funds through Tenwek High School to act as the implementing institution in line with the Public Finance Management (PFM) Act.
“The school will be built at Bomet Township Primary School grounds. Construction will begin soon. This is a legacy project for our region and future generations,” said MP Kilel.
He also noted that while many counties have high schools named after them, Bomet County lacked one, making the establishment of Bomet High School both symbolic and necessary.
