Teachers in Narok County are up in arms after discovering unexplained deductions labelled “SWAL” in their July 2025 payslips. The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Narok branch, has written an official protest letter to the Secretary General of KUPPET Kenya, demanding answers and immediate corrective action.
In a letter dated July 30, 2025, and signed by the branch’s Executive Secretary, Charles Ngeno, the union expressed deep concern over deductions that appeared on members’ payslips without their knowledge or consent. The deductions, listed as loans, have sparked widespread outrage among teachers who are questioning their legitimacy and origin.

According to the letter, Narok teachers are demanding an explanation on who authorised the deductions and how such transactions were approved without prior consultation. The union has insisted that the deductions be stopped immediately and that any amount already deducted be fully refunded to the affected members.
The letter also makes it clear that the recent National Governing Council (NGC) meeting neither discussed nor approved any form of deduction on members’ payslips. In a strong statement, the Narok KUPPET branch has distanced itself from what it describes as an unauthorised infringement, vowing to defend the sanctity and privacy of its members’ financial information.
“As a branch, we distance ourselves from any unauthorised infringement on our members’ payslips and are determined to ensure that the sanctity and privacy of our members’ payslips is upheld and respected,” read part of the letter.
The union now awaits a formal response from the national office and is urging swift action to resolve the matter. Teachers have made it clear that unless the issue is addressed urgently, it could lead to more profound discontent and possible loss of trust in union leadership.
