The President of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA), Kipchumba Maiyo, has commended the level of preparedness ahead of the National Secondary School Games, set to commence in Kakamega this week.
Addressing the press at Bukhungu Stadium, Maiyo encouraged supporters to attend in large numbers and energise the atmosphere for the young athletes. He assured fans of “thrilling and competitive matches” throughout the event.
Maiyo highlighted the growing standard of competition, saying that schools have steadily improved in both skill and determination over the years.
He emphasised that the games serve not only as a platform for inter-school rivalry but also as a crucial talent identification ground for scouts and sports federations looking to nurture future stars.
“It is not just about competition; we want to identify talent that can be nurtured by various federations so that the youth can have a better future through sports,” said Maiyo.
The president shared the remarkable story of Aldrine Kibet, who rose to fame at the 2023 National Games, held at the same venue.

Kibet played a vital role in St. Anthony Boys High School clinching the national title and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
Kibet, through the Talanta Hela initiative, received a scholarship to attend the Nastic Sports Academy in Spain, which put him in contact with international scouting networks.
His journey culminated in signing a four-year professional contract with Celta Vigo on July 16, 2025, and he has since earned caps with the Kenya U-20 national team.
Maiyo made the remarks while inspecting sports facilities across Kakamega County in the company of KSSSA officials. He confirmed that Bukhungu Stadium will host the finals of the East Africa Secondary School Games, following the national games.
He added that teams will train on the artificial turf in advance to get accustomed to the pitch conditions before the tournament officially begins.
“After the National Games, we shall camp here in Kakamega for two weeks as we prepare for the East Africa Secondary School Games, which will begin on August 14,” Maiyo said.
