Kakamega Senator Khalwale condemns fatal shooting of college student in Thika

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has vocally condemned the fatal shooting of Victor Otieno, a student at Thika Technical Training Institute, who was among 11 Kenyans confirmed dead during the countrywide demonstrations on June 25.

Otieno was reportedly shot along Thika Road, an incident that has ignited outrage and calls for accountability from leaders across the political spectrum.

A heart-breaking video circulating online captured Victor Otieno’s final moments during the protests, showing the college student appearing jovial and interacting with his fellow Gen-Z demonstrators.

Senator Khalwale took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his profound dismay and demand explanations for the tragic loss of life. He questioned the justification for a police officer to shoot an unarmed student who, by all accounts, posed no discernible threat.

“Early yesterday morning, Sen Beatrice Ogolla, Sen Mungatana, Sen Kisang, Sen Veronica Maina and I together held a brief session of prayer so that the day’s demonstrations would be peaceful throughout. Very sad that this boy is gone! From this series of events, clearly he was not armed. How then was he a threat to the shooter enough to warrant this? A permanent solution must be found to put an immediate stop to this mess,” Khalwale stated emphatically

Khalwale’s sentiments were echoed by other political figures, including Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, who also condemned Victor’s killing. Owino, in his condolence message, asserted that Victor had “paid the ultimate price for standing for justice against the Kenya Kwanza administration.”

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has reported that eleven Kenyans died during the protests, intensifying the pressure on authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding each fatality.
