The Lakeside Scholars Association has condemned the brutal killing of a teacher from Homa Bay County and called for speedy investigations into the matter.

The scholars’ patron, Obungu Owich, noted that the killing of Albert Ojwang, who was a teacher, must not be swept under the carpet.

Speaking at the Mama Grace Onyango social hall during their Annual General Meeting, Owich said the cold-blooded murder of Ojwang was a testament to the rising impunity within the national police service.

Owich said all culprits involved in the murder must be brought to account for their deeds.

The scholar noted that the police are supposed to protect lives and property, not the other way around.

Owich said the current government promised Kenyans that extrajudicial killings would come to an end when it ascended to power and wondered what was happening.

Earlier, members of the Kenya Union of Primary and Secondary Education Teachers demonstrated in Kisumu to protest the death of their colleague.

Led by the executive secretary, Zablon Awange, the teachers called for a speedy investigation into the matter so that justice could be served.

The late Ojwang was reportedly picked up by detectives from his home in Homa Bay County and driven to the central police station in the city for his death to be later reported under mysterious circumstances.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Central Police Station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Samson Talam, has been arrested in Eldoret..

According to the DCI, Talam had switched off his mobile phone as officers closed in on him.

He was eventually located, arrested, and handed over to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for further processing.

His arrest brings to three the number of individuals in custody in connection with the death of Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.

Another female officer linked to the case was also questioned for several hours on Friday and is expected to face further interrogation.

Talam is considered a prime suspect after multiple witnesses and suspects reportedly implicated him during Ipoa’s ongoing investigation.

Ojwang had been arrested at his home in Homa Bay over allegations of publishing false information. He was transferred to Nairobi, where he was booked at Central Police Station.

He later died after reportedly being severely beaten while in custody.

Ojwang’s death has sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police conduct. So far, two other police officers and a technician accused of tampering with surveillance footage have been detained.

IPOA said some of the 17 officers questioned in connection with the case have since returned to the oversight body to revise their initial statements and provide new information about the fatal assault.

The oversight agency also noted that forensic analysis of the suspects’ mobile phones and results from the government chemist are still pending, and are expected to play a key role in the probe.
