The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a press statement clarifying the events leading to the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang, a suspect who died while in custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.
According to the statement signed by Muchari Nyaga, the Director of Corporate Communication and official spokesperson of the NPS, Ojwang was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on allegations of false publication and was legally held at the police station.
“NPS confirms that Albert Omondi Ojwang was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody,” the statement reads.
The Service explained that while in the holding cell, the suspect allegedly injured himself. “While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall,” Nyaga stated.
Efforts were made to save Ojwang’s life, according to the NPS. “Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” the statement continues.

The police service has since notified the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which has launched an investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
“In line with statutory requirements, the IPOA has launched an investigation into the incident,” the NPS spokesperson confirmed.
Reaffirming their stance on human rights, the Service stated, “NPS reaffirms its commitment to upholding constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms.”
The statement comes amid growing public concern and online speculation about the cause of Ojwang’s death, with calls for accountability and transparency trending across social media platforms.
The NPS urged the public to remain calm and allow independent agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
