TSC quashes promotion of 1864 teachers as parliament gets tough on the irregular exercise

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has opted to soften the education committee’s stand by requesting that the promotion list be expunged of a total of 1864 teachers who were promoted without meeting the 3-year requirement as stipulated by the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).

The teachers are mainly non-administrators. The balance of the initial 5291 teachers were retained as they hold administrative positions, which attracted a few applicants.

In a detailed document addressed to the Education committee, TSC, looked to have used a soft and persuasive tone which is needed at this time when teachers are up in arms in what many of the successful describe as unfairness while the disgruntled group praise it as the step towards correcting the mess that the commission meted on them.

In the report, teachers with seven years of experience in the current grade and those with less than 3 years to retirement will be given priority, as TSC plans to re-advertise the 1864 slots.

The Commission has promised to fully comply with ensuring that promotions are based on the recommendations noted by the committee.

To ensure that the CPG is strictly adhered to, the Commission has indicated that any review of it is subject to public scrutiny, as enshrined in Article 10 of the Constitution.
