The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has intensified demands for the immediate transfer of West Pokot County Director of Education, Simon Wamae, accusing him of poor management and authoritarian leadership.

Led by West Pokot KNUT Secretary Martin Sembelo, union officials gave the Ministry of Education a two-week deadline, warning they would hold a three-day protest outside Wamae’s office if no action is taken.

“This is our second formal demand for his transfer. Kenya is not short of capable leaders who can work with us in West Pokot,” said Sembelo, who described Wamae’s leadership as oppressive.

KNUT also condemned what they claimed was a directive from Wamae requiring primary school headteachers to collect Sh70 from each student’s parent.

Additionally, the union voiced frustration over the ongoing joblessness of trained PI teachers, noting that many are now parents themselves with children in secondary school, yet remain unemployed.

In his defense, Wamae denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically driven.
“They should provide evidence. They’re just tarnishing my name. I reserve the right to take legal action,” he stated.

Regarding the Sh70 fee, Wamae said it wasn’t sanctioned by his office.

“That’s the work of the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association. I did not authorise it, and it is indeed illegal. Schools usually budget for co-curricular activities, and if there’s a shortfall, headteachers are tasked with sourcing solutions—not my office.” he clarified.
