Parents decry sorry state of bridge for school going kids, as heavy rain resumes

Nyamache Sub County parents have reiterated their cry to the government to repair bridge in the area that put life threats to students, teachers and traders.

They lamented that the bridge which was swept by heavy rains three years ago, has taken both the National and County Governments a lot of time to show any interest of solving the problem.

“We have convened many meetings with officials from both governments but they keep on tossing us to each other until we gave up on the promise of anyone coming for aid,” said of the bitter parent.

The residents feared on their school going children’s life who have to pass on the tangling and sagging bridge to school especially during the ongoing rain season.

Others who chose to use alternative long routes to escort their children to school accused boda boda operators who take the advantage of their misery extortion them by charging them double the riding fare.

Farmers also narrated on great losses they have incurred as their farm produce like bananas, pineapples and vegetable perish in garden because commutation from the farm to the market has been blurred by the broken bridge.

Masige East MCA Michael Motume blamed Kisii County Governor Simba Arati for his failure to cooperate with Bobasi MP for quick development. However his Masige West counterpart Jacob Bagaka, defended the Governor saying that his was to distribute the Money to Wards and leave MCA to decide on their Development priorities.

Bobasi MP Innocent Obiri regretted that the bridge had taken long to complete attributing it to delay by the national government to disburse funds.

“I talked to the CS for transport and communication and assured me that the bridge will be completed by September.” he said.

When Education News contacted the contractor, construction work was on going but blamed the ongoing heavy rains for the delay of the work.
