A team of researchers from Kibabii University has been awarded an $8,900 grant by the International Centre of Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement, an institution operating under the auspices of UNESCO, to implement a project to tackle gender-based violence through martial arts training.
Dr. Edwin Masibo leads the initiative, “Empowering Girls and Women Through Martial Arts for Safety and Gender-Based Violence Prevention,” with Dr. Patrick Owoche as Co-Principal Investigator.
Olympian and celebrated taekwondo practitioner Faith Ogallo has been enlisted as the project’s lead martial arts coach.

The programme seeks to use martial arts to empower girls and women, equipping them with practical self-defence skills while raising awareness about gender-based violence and promoting community safety.
“This is a critical step toward addressing the physical safety of women and girls and fostering confidence and resilience in vulnerable communities,” said Dr Masibo.
The project is expected to roll out in May 2025, targeting schools and community groups across Bungoma County.
The researchers say the initiative could be a model for similar programs nationwide.
