KNUT (Kenya National Union of Teachers) has demanded that free education funds be released to schools before December 31, 2023.
KNUT National Chairman Karinga Munuhe says schools have struggled to run, saying the government withholding the money is worrying.
“Our schools are currently grappling with lack of funds, and we are worried. As a union, we want Education CS Ezekiel Machogu to ensure free education funds are released before 31st of this month,” he said.
Concerning school uniform, he rooted for similar uniforms at comprehensive schools, arguing it was wrong to have different uniforms in the same schools yet they are managed by one principal.
Speaking in Kimori, Konoin Sub-county, he decried the mistreatment of teachers at the multinational tea companies in the area, saying urgent action should be taken.
“We have received a lot of complaints from our teachers serving at the tea estates. These teachers are being mistreated and subjected to various forms of injustices daily. This is unacceptable and we want the government to take urgent action, failure to which KNUT will take action,” added Munuhe.
Munuhe further warned teachers in the region against wrangles, directing his deputy Malel Langat to spearhead unity efforts among the tutors.
Former KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sosion on his part urged the union to work with the government, assuring that an additional 50,000 teachers will soon be hired.
Sossion also said the Competency-Based Curriculum will undergo further reviews, adding that promotion of teachers, which had been halted before, will continue.
